Man sitting in front of a big screen - What Is A SWM Adapter?

An SWM Adapter is a system that allows you to diplex your system. SWM stands for single-wire multi-switch. Meaning all of your different switches and channels can run through a single wire via this system.

This system can seem very complicated for new users, especially when trying to upgrade from a DIRECTV system that does not need one.

It can also be expensive and a bit of a hassle. Keep reading to find out if you need an SWM adapter as well as what to do to get one.

What Do You Need it For?

You need the SWM Adapter for DIRECTV to combine off-air antenna and cable service into one line through DIRECTV. In addition, this system allows you to diplex through DIRECTV.

To put it simply, you can get more channels and options through DIRECTV without any extra cables. All of these different options run through the adapter and one cable.

This makes it more accessible and simple for users. It also eliminates any extra bulk and the need to run multiple lines to one house.

How Does it Work?

As mentioned, the SWM adapter allows all the different channels to be run through one adapter. In addition, it allows for one wire no matter how many tuners, whereas, before this adapter, you needed a wire per tuner.

This requires extra cords, adapters, etc. It also made it so you could only use one tuner at a time due to the limited processing abilities.

The SWM adapter allows the DIRECTV system to be able to access a massive amount of information quickly. Meaning it is more accessible for users and faster overall, with less work to put into it.

Will DIRECTV work without SWM?

Some DIRECTV receives work without SWM. For example, all of DIRECTV’s new equipment and receivers require an SWM adapter. However, if you have an older system, it will work without it. It will just be much more complicated to set up.

The company itself also does not help set up old receivers anymore due to training and difficulty. Also, most likely, to try and get users to upgrade.

As of 2017, DIRECTV stopped making receivers that can work without SWM. So any receivers from before then will likely work as long as your dish is also compatible with the old system.

All of this is to say that technically, you can make DIRECTV work without an SWM adapter, but the company will not help you. It would be much less hassle just to use one.

How Much Does it Cost?

To buy a DIRECTV SWM adapter by itself only costs around 20 dollars. However, there are many factors this cost depends on. When buying just the adapter, you must ensure your receiver and dish are compatible with that type of SWM adapter.

The cost increases significantly if you have an older system or dish not compatible with the SWM system. Thankfully, if you do need to upgrade your whole system, the SWM adapter often comes with it.

A complete upgrade with an SWM adapter can vary in cost depending on what system you choose. This can be anywhere from just the service fee of 100 dollars to a couple of hundred dollars for the system and installation.

How do I hook up my DIRECTV SWM adapter?

To hook up your DIRECTV SWM adapter, you will need to set up the power inserter, which provides power to the adapter. Next, simply find a source of AC power about 15 feet from the source. Then connect the line from the red port to the power port on the adapter.

After connecting the power, you can change the receivers over to the SWM adapter. Any incompatible receivers, either from outside lines or outdated DIRECTV receivers, will need to be replaced.

Once you are done with this, you are basically set up. All that is left to do is make sure your TV is ready to connect to the new adapter. Then, go through your TV and manually set every channel to the new satellite setup.

Final Thoughts on What Is An SWM Adapter

Overall, SWM adapters are a system that simplifies the installation and use of multiple lines through DIRECTV. While you may try to fight this system, it is much easier to upgrade to a newer system.

Instead of having dozens of wires to deal with when you want more channels, you can have one. But, when you try to stay with your old system, you will find yourself in more trouble than expected.

Non-SWM systems are no longer made or serviced by DIRECTV, so you are on your own. Upgrading can be expensive, but it will save you a lot of hassle in the long run.
